Whether or not a mixed martial arts fighter needs to take mma supplements for preparation, for an actual fight, or after the fight, mma supplements are in debate for some mma fighters. For me the answer is quite clear.

Fight preparation involves a fighter that will be involved in a fight training camp and will be going through a very regimented routine to condition their body and mind for a fight. These pre-fight training camps usually last about four weeks and will involve much trauma and injury to the fighter's body. Mixed martial arts supplements can help here. While many MMA supplements are made, each has a unique ability tailored to a certain mma fighter's regiment. Some mma supplements will aid with muscle and joint recovery, while others will be used for increasing VO2 and VO-max.

For the actual fight, many fighters are forced to weigh-in and come into the fight at a pre-determined weight class. In the larger mma fight organizations, fighters are given a 24-hour time period where a fighter weighs in and actually fights. This grace period allows a fighter to dehydrate before the weigh-in, and regain their water weight and mass to perform at optimal conditions for the fight. MMA supplements exist to aid fighters in both the dehydration period, as well as the weight re-uptake. Thus, making it possible for a fighter to weigh into the fight at a much heavier weight than originally set, giving the fighter a competitive advantage.

MMA supplements, while very often used during the preparations of a fight, are often neglected for post fight routines. Ironically, this is when a fighter is most nutrient deprived, and where the most benefit could be obtained. During the preparation of the fight, fighters will often obsess about every calorie; protein and liquid that enters their body, but after the fight has taken place, the fighter generally consider themselves off the training regiment. Fighters are well known for putting on post-fight pounds in the event that another fight is not lined up for them. Mixed martial arts supplements would aid a fighter in both muscle and joint recovery, but also to stay in shape and ready for the next fight.
